Once the photograph has been taken or the illustration completed, the image is scanned into a computer and placed in the proper position. The art director also selects typefaces for the headline and body copy and then, using the computer, correctly positions the headline and body copy. Once all the elements are in place, the computer file is sent to the newspaper or magazine in which the ad will run.

Membrane press technology, formerly known as the vacuum press system, is used for the lamination of molded (three-dimensionally shaped) substrates with veneers, vinyls, and other materials. The paper is then printed and generally coated with polyurethane, urea, polyester, acrylic or melamine resins, or a combination thereof. Only twisting is required to process filament fiber into yarn, but staple fibers must be carded to combine the fibers into a continuous ropelike form, combed to straighten the long fibers, and drawn out into continuous strands, which are then twisted to the desired degree. In a membrane press, heat is applied to both top and bottom, pressure is applied to the top only, and a vacuum is drawn from the bottom. Television had been introduced in 1940, but because of the high cost of tv sets and the lack of programming, it was not immediately embraced.
